Mild Nyoni
Mild Nyoni began writing Candle (It's a Faith Thing) not at a desk, but on his back — in a hospital bed, with a drip in his arm and a fear in his chest he could not name without crying. For weeks he watched the corridor light pass under his door at night, and told himself: if that small light can reach me here, then perhaps something else can reach me too.
In that ward he learned what faith really is. Not the loud thing people perform in public — but the small candle you carry inside your chest when the doctors have run out of words. When he came home, this story was waiting for him. He had begun it years earlier and believed the manuscript was lost forever. He was wrong. Nothing truly given by God is ever lost. It only waits for you to be ready to carry it.
Chumwa, the young woman at the heart of the novel, is not Mild — she is braver than he says he'll ever be. But the candle she carries is the same one he was given in that hospital bed. He is only passing it on.
The world of the Six Lands
Candle is set across six ancient lands of a single valley, each with its own people, spirits, and reckonings:
Magunda
Cattle herders and millet farmers of the central plain, ruled by Chief Gaga and the spirit-medium Mama Magumo.
Kirombe
Blacksmiths of the red hills, makers of spear, hoe and sacred bell, governed by the council of the Moto.
Selani
The market crossroads, run by the women-merchants known as the Mamake — rich in beads, salt and dried fish.
Bwanaka
Warrior-hunters of the savanna edge who worship the lion-spirit Simba-Mwana under the warlord Tembo.
Ndololo
Gentle fisherfolk and reed-weavers along the marshes of Lake Ziwa, led by old Baba Kongo.
Ziwa-Chini
"Beneath the Water" — a village cursed by Mama Magumo, whose people now live as mermaids ruled by Queen Nzuri.
